It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, wait, it’s the Central Texas Airport/EcoMerge/Green Corporate Center changing right before our eyes!
Don’t let the sales promotion fool you – the greenest thing about the development so far is the money that Jim Carpenter & Associates plans to make. Originally planned as a private, commercial airport surrounded by a corporate center, it is now supposedly going to include an industrial development, manufacturing plants and a bridge across the Colorado River. Ask yourself, now why would we want to put in a manufacturing plant at river’s edge? Would we put in a hog farm in the middle of downtown?
Despite what supporters want you to believe, the proposed location on the banks of the Colorado is anything BUT green! Jet fuel, chemicals, hazardous materials (for example, arsenic, used in the manufacture of solar arrays and other high tech items) from manufacturing by-products and minimally treated sewage will all be making their way into the Colorado. The flight path runs north to south, roughly over 1704 all the way from Elgin to the proposed location at FM969 and FM1704, bringing noise and air pollution. Traffic will increase on FM 969, FM1704, and Highway 71. Power and water lines will have to be build out to the development. Prime agricultural and recreational land will be lost. Industrial development at this location isn’t good for the people of Bastrop County and it’s not good for the Colorado River.
It doesn’t have to be this way! Bastrop County is one of the fastest growing counties in Texas. We have a rural quality of life envied by many, with abundant natural resources, an educated population and proximity to Austin. We can protect open spaces AND grow economically. We don’t have to choose between jobs OR protecting our quality of life. Let’s site commercial developments appropriately in already-existing commercial areas, and NOT along the banks of the Colorado. Jim Carpenter’s representative recently lauded Bastrop County’s support as being indespensible to the success of the project. We can demand that the development be moved to a suitable location in return for our support.
Please join me in urging Jim Carpenter & Associates – and your elected officials – to ensure that the CTA/EcoMerge/Green Corporate Centers development really IS green, by building the project in an appropriate commercial location.
This is not a done deal, and there’s plenty you can do to help. Speak out! Contact your elected officials and demand that the site be moved.
